ROADS POLICY GOING OFF THE RAILS |

The bizarre distortion in Britain’s current transport policy is
threatening our long term economic future, our environmental
performance and personal safety.
The best route to financial recovery and sustained growth is
investment in the road network, according to the latest edition of Road
File, the annual compilation of transport statistics published today by
the Road Users’ Alliance. Road File 2010 reveals that 70 per cent of
commuting and business journeys are made by car, while nearly 90
per cent of freight is moved on the road network. Across Britain, only
8 per cent of commuters take the train to work.

ROADS POLICY SENDS DRIVERS BACK TO THE STONE AGE |

If present policies continue, road users will face 656 million
hours of delay – enough to take us back to the Stone Age.
Motorists face being condemned to 75,000 years of jams, according
to the latest edition of Road File 2010 (published 25th February
2010). Road File, compiled by the Road Users’ Alliance, reveals
that, if current policies based on minimal levels of investment in the
road network continue, over the next 15 years congestion will rise
by 37%, and the UK’s motorists will waste 656 million hours a year
sitting in traffic jams – the equivalent of 75,000 years. 75,000 years
ago Neanderthal man roamed Europe, trying to stay out of the way
of woolly mammoths and sabre-tooth tigers.

"Commenting on today’s strategy paper, “Going for Growth” the Chairman of
the Road Users’ Alliance, Tim Green, said: “The Government is right to
recognise that sustained investment in Britain’s transport infrastructure is
critical for our growth and international competitiveness, but has picked the
